King Alfred’s Academy Music Department offers instrumental tuition across all three sites. We currently have nine instrumental teachers who visit on a weekly basis to teach various families of instruments.

It is not always possible, given the timetables of the teachers, to arrange for all music lessons to take place outside academic teaching time. Teachers try hard to keep instrumental lessons to lunch/break times where possible, but in general, they take place outside of academic lessons. However, given the two-week timetable that operates at the Academy, we do not find this to have a detrimental effect on academic progress.
We have both private and County Music Teachers who teach here. The ‘County Music Service’ charges per set of 10 lessons and the prices vary depending on how many students are in the group. All the information about pricing is on the sheet that you fill out to sign up for lessons. If it is a private teacher, then the payment is dealt with separately through agreement with that particular teacher. Please note that students who are eligible for free school meals are entitled to free instrumental tuition through the ‘County Music Service.’
Using the link below and filling in the form will register your interest in lessons. This will start a process of communication with the Oxfordshire County Music Service, through which you can then arrange for lessons to start.
Alternatively, teachers in the Music Department will be happy to help get lessons organised. At the beginning of each term lessons are publicised in music assemblies. If your child is moving up from primary school, then they can often stay with the same teacher if they are a ‘County Music Service’ teacher.
We try really hard to ensure that the young people who have instrumental lessons are recognised in their music lessons. At the end of every half term, we have a ‘performance showcase’ where they are invited to play their instruments to the rest of their class. We also have numerous concerts/performance opportunities throughout the academic year. The music elective programme is thriving and we run ensembles to cater for all abilities and instruments.
Please do get in touch with a member of the Music Department should you have any queries.
