IN PErson Careers Fair

Every year, King Alfred's Academy hosts a Careers Fair for all students in Year 9 to Year 13.  This year, we held our Careers Fair at The Sports Hall in the Wantage Leisure Centre on 12 October 2026 and had over 1,100 students in attendance throughout the day.  This year, we were delighted to welcome 34 businesses from a range of industries, education providers, and volunteer organisations from across the UK who supported our students to explore options in their future Career Pathways.

King Alfred’s Academy opens doors to future careers through inspiring Careers Fair

Students at King Alfred’s Academy explored a world of future opportunities at the academy’s Careers Fair on 12 October, meeting employers, discovering specialist industries and learning more about the many pathways available to them beyond school.

The event brought together a wide range of businesses, universities and public service organisations, giving students the opportunity to speak directly with professionals, ask questions and gain first-hand insight into different careers and industries.

Among the highlights were Oxford Dynamics, a robotics company from Oxford showcasing its robotic dog, Morgan Sindall Construction, Oxford Space Systems, West Mill Sustainable Energy Trust, Sustainable Wantage, Wantage Town Council, and more! Students could find out about careers in nuclear waste management, the armed forces, policing, the fire service and the NHS, as well as exploring opportunities across other education and volunteer sectors.

The fair forms part of King Alfred’s Academy’s wider commitment to helping every student develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to pursue their ambitions. Through its Careers Centre and KA Academic Enrichment Programme (KAAEP), the academy connects students with local businesses and Oxford-based academic opportunities, offering experiences designed to broaden their horizons and support their individual interests.

The programme includes work experience placements, Innovation Experience Days, academic exploration, university roadshows, guest lectures, volunteering opportunities and a range of other enrichment activities. Students’ interests are actively sought through surveys and student meetings, helping the academy connect them with experiences that are relevant to their aspirations and encourage them to explore new possibilities.

Jonathan Smart, Headteacher of King Alfred’s Academy, said:

“Our ambition is for every student at King Alfred’s Academy to recognise their potential and feel equipped to pursue the future that is right for them. Events like our Careers Fair allow students to discover opportunities they may not previously have considered, meet people with first-hand industry experience and begin to picture what their own futures could look like.

“Through our Careers Centre and KA Academic Enrichment Programme, we want to nurture students’ individual interests, build their confidence and inspire them to aim high. By working closely with employers, universities and public services, we can provide meaningful experiences that connect learning in the classroom with the opportunities available in the wider world.”

Richard Evans, CEO of Cambrian Learning Trust, said:

“At Cambrian Learning Trust, our vision is to nurture growth and inspire minds, ensuring that our young people have the opportunities and encouragement they need to flourish. King Alfred’s Academy’s Careers Fair and wider enrichment programme are excellent examples of this vision in action.

“By building strong partnerships with local employers, universities and organisations, the academy is helping students develop ambition, broaden their understanding of the world and make informed choices about their futures. This work reflects our values of integrity, kindness, ambition and unity, with a shared commitment to ensuring that every young person is supported to recognise their strengths and achieve their full potential.”

The Careers Fair demonstrates the value of bringing education and the world of work closer together, helping students make informed decisions about their next steps while discovering the breadth of opportunities available locally and beyond.

Through its continued investment in careers education and academic enrichment, King Alfred’s Academy is working to ensure that students leave school with not only the knowledge they need, but also the confidence, experience and ambition to take their next steps successfully.
